I need to learn new curse words

Ever have one of those days where it may have been better to just pull the covers over your head in the morning and refuse to get out? Yesterday was one of those.

It started with waking up feeling like I might be fighting off a sinus infection. I have the option to work at home some days, so I started that way. By mid-morning I decided I was well enough to go into work and headed in that direction.

On my way down the Interstate (think "motorway" or "divided carriageway" for overseas folk) I made a completely normal lane change to pass a slow truck. Apparently there was some hot-shot driving extremely fast who had planned to go through that space, and as he zoomed up on me he laid on the horn as he swerved around me. As soon as he passed me he cut back into my lane and hit his brakes hard, forcing me to slam on my brakes to avoid rear-ending him. Fortunately there was no one behind me so I didn't get hit from the rear. I dodged over a lane to avoid him, and he again accelerated until he was just past me, cut over hard, and again slammed on his brakes. Cutting back over the other way I was able to avoid him and gain a safe distance from him.

I had a car camera mounted in my old car and would have had all this (including his license plate number!) on video, but I hadn't gotten around to mounting it in my new car yet. I got a couple of photos of him and his car with my cell phone camera, but of course it didn't include anything that led up to his attempts to cause a wreck. Mentally I moved reinstalling the camera up on my priority list. Then, as I was calming myself by reviewing my plan for the day I realized I'd left my work ID badge at home. I could get a temporary paper pass at the security office, but without that bit of plastic I can't even get to the bathroom and back unless someone else opens the doors for me. Greatly annoyed (I'm being polite here!) I turned around and went back home.

As evening came I changed into my dance gear (this is a dance blog, right?) and headed to MSD for what will probably be a regular Thursday evening thing. This class is advertised as a "Beginner/Intermediate" transition class, but I have no idea what that means. It's roughly on par with Julie's Beginner II class, and far easier than either Susan's Beginner II or Julie's Advanced Beginner classes.  Once again I begin to wonder whether the Royal Academy of Dance doesn't have a point with their formal levels and qualification tests.

Class itself went well. Apparently having only 7 or 8 students is the norm for this class. I had about 10 minutes to warm up before class started. The twanged spot on my left leg didn't bother me at all. There was some residual knottiness in my calf muscles but nothing more than usual, and I had no cramping at all during class. I think maybe my body might even like a 3 class a week schedule better than the twice a week schedule. I'm enjoying this class, and it makes for a good unwinder near the end of the week.

On my way home I did a bit of grocery shopping, then watched a bit of TV. Just as I was thinking this crappy day had ended on a good note my right adductor went into spasm, followed by the left. Oh holy hell that hurts! I'd managed to get to my feet before it got really bad, but I spent the next 10 hours minutes just kinda standing in a slight plié -- because trying to stand fully upright hurt far worse -- trying to release the cramps. I've been told that drinking a bit of pickle juice can be effective at releasing such cramps, but that presumes that one is mobile enough to get to the stuff. Maybe there's a market for emergency doses of pickle juice in quick-access containers one can carry in a pocket?

Now perhaps my need for new curse words is more evident -- I've pretty well worn out all those that I already know.

(BTW I went out and installed the car cam. Hopefully that will act as a talisman to ward off crazy, self-entitled, maniac drivers.)

  2. Glad you got the car cam installed. Glad you survived the trip to not-work ok.

I've been thinking of doing a post on dealing with cramps. I think perhaps I should! I've never heard of pickle juice working, but I recommend all my dancers to drink electrolytes and plenty of water. And salt doesn't hurt either.

    I hope you're feeling a bit better!

  3. Sorry you had such a rough day! I agree on RAD--knowing the specific differences between class levels would be really helpful. Hope you are feeling better!
